The Onchain Gas War: Coinbase vs Robinhood vs Kraken | Onchain Radio Ep. 2

Episode 2 of Onchain Radio breaks down the three-way L2 gas strategy between Coinbase, Robinhood, and Kraken — three U.S. exchanges building onchain rails and competing to keep you inside their app. The analogy is a road trip. ETH is premium / high-octane. The L2 is regular. The brand on the station is the exchange. Same highway. Same fuel. Three different signs. • Coinbase (Base) — first mover. Gas has stayed cheap and steady. Pennies. No network token. Some Coinbase One / exchange rebates, but no countdown clock on the pump. • Robinhood — covers network fees for eligible in-app swaps. Not “free.” A customer-acquisition expense. Chain live July 2026 on Arbitrum Orbit. No network coin. Volume since launch has been the story. The subsidy, per their terms, is set to expire September 29, 2026 unless they renew it. • Kraken (Ink) — a punch card. Points for activity on Ink over ETH. Terms: non-tokenized, not redeemable, no stated cash value, no published snapshot. The Ink Foundation is in the background. Farmers are still farming. Host thesis: Payward pushing a reported IPO window toward Q2 2027 may be letting that token story cook off the public-company balance sheet first. The real question is not the price of a gallon. It is who is holding the nozzle when the sign flips — and whether a discounted fill-up with an expiration date actually keeps the driver. DISCLAIMER: Carlo D’Angelo is a lawyer, but not your lawyer.
